Phoebe Ella Penney was born July 21, 1860 in Andover, Henry County, Illinois to Theodore M and Marcia A
(Valentine) Penney. Her father was killed during the siege of Knoxville, Tennessee on November 18, 1863.
Her mother then married Erastus P. Boyden in 1869 and together they moved to Tiskilwa, Illinois in 1876,
where Erastus purchased the Tiskilwa House.
Ella met Edward and Sadie Engel when she was staying at the hotel during Edward's tenure with the Chicago
Rock Island & Pacific Railroad. Afterwards she met Samuel F. Crossett who was also working at the Chicago
Rock Island - Chicago Burlington & Quincy Junction at Wyanet, Illinois.
They were married at the
Tiskilwa House on August 20, 1879.
They moved in late 1879 making
Wyanet, Illinois their home.
This entry into Sadie Engel's guestbook was made at the
Tiskilwa House prior to her marriage to Samuel Crossett.
