|John and Jacobine Engel, Katherine's parents immigrated to the United States from France in 1852.
They first settled in Auburn, New York where Edward John was born in 1854. Moving to Covington, Kentucky
soon after the birth of Edward, they remained there until their arrival to Bureau County, Illinois in 1856.

In the 1860 Federal Census the Engel family is
entered on lines 34 - 40. The spelling is wrong as it
should be Engel, not Engle. This was fairly common
as some census takers spelled words phonically.
Language barriers also contributed to errors in the
census. Notice at the bottom of the census Dr.
Charles Hugo, a physician boarded with the Engel's.
This was Albert Gustave Hugo's father
In the 1870 Census below left, Katherine Engel is
living with Nicholas and Catherine Hauter.
Nicholas was the brother of Jacobine (Hauter)
Engel, Katherine's mother.
